Romee’s Bedroom Makeover: "Rainbows Pink, and Fancy Stuff"

Updated: 22 hours ago

When we first asked our daughter, Romee, what she wanted for her new bedroom, her answer was simple: rainbows, pink, and fancy stuff. That’s it. Just a sparkly little wish list from a kid who knows what she loves. And honestly? Those are my favorite rooms to create.

Kids’ bedrooms are playful, full of personality, and always a chance to mix function with whimsy. This space quickly became one of my most loved bedroom transformations.

Here’s how we took Romee's bedroom from ugly and boring to every little girl's dream room—step by step.

Part 1: Prep + Paint

Like every project, we started this Bedroom Makeover with the basics. The walls got patched, sanded, painted and washed up to give us a clean slate. Fresh paint is always the fastest way to start seeing progress, and it gave us a good foundation for the colourful touches to come! We painted the main wall colour in Romee's room White Dove by Benjamin Moore. It is one of my favourite and most used white paints.

Part 2: Flooring + Baseboards

Next up—new flooring and baseboards. This instantly refreshed the space. Flooring always sets the tone for a room, and the crisp white baseboards made it feel clean, modern, and ready for the fun layers to come.

Part 3: Board + Batten on a Budget

A feature wall can transform a room, but it doesn’t have to cost a fortune. For just $65, we created a board and batten wall using simple baseboards from Home Depot. It added depth, character, and charm—exactly what this space needed.

panelling too!

Part 4: The Decor Magic

This is where Romee’s “fancy” wish really came to life. For $40, I grabbed a piece of tulle

from Amazon and turned it into dreamy curtains. To hang them, we used a gold curtain rod ($18) with matching curtain hoops ($15). Simple, affordable touches that instantly elevated the room.

We layered in an area rug, some Etsy wall prints, IKEA bedding and picture frames, and suddenly the space started to sparkle with personality.

I painted the trim, doors, and board and batten in a soft pink—playful but timeless. Rose Water by Behr. The pink paint accompanied the Gold accents so elegantly. We swapped the chrome door handles for round, gold handles, and a fresh white and gold fan polished off the space.

And of course, bookshelves. Every single kid’s room I design includes bookshelves. They’re practical, personal, and truly complete the room. I love the opportunity to incorporate functional decor!

The Final Reveal

The result? A room that is whimsical, cozy, and completely Romee. It’s pink and fancy without being overwhelming, rainbow-inspired without being chaotic, and it feels like a little sanctuary she can grow into.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: kids’ bedrooms are some of my absolute favourite spaces to work on. They’re a chance to get creative, lean into fun ideas, and design something magical. Romee’s room is a reminder that you don’t need a massive budget to give your kids a space that feels special—you just need some paint, trim, and little imagination!
