The original master bedroom in our first flip? Plain, dated, and dingy. We knew it had potential, but like the rest of the house, we were working with a small budget, a lot of ideas, and escapee toddlers who learned to ride a bicycle far too soon....
Still, we were determined to create a bedroom that felt intentional, modern, and calming—a space that felt like ours, even if we would never sleep in it alone.
So, with a $1,500 budget and a few DIY tricks up our sleeves, we got to work.

What We Did:
- Navy Board & Batten Feature Wall
We wanted a bold, moody moment—and this wall brought the drama in the best way. The deep navy tone added instant sophistication, and the boxed board and batten gave the room height and texture without overwhelming it. We created the board and batten using a pin-nailer and a pack of baseboards from Home Depot. Best. $100. Ever. Spent. - New Flooring
We carried the same budget-friendly laminate flooring from the rest of the main floor into the bedroom for continuity. Plus, it made everything feel brighter and cleaner.
- Closet Doors, Modern Fan & Area Rug
Swapping out the dated closet bifolds for clean white panel doors made a huge difference. We added a modern ceiling fan for airflow and style, and found a neutral area rug on Wayfair to ground the room and soften the space.
- IKEA Curtain Hack
One of our favorite finishing touches: IKEA curtain panels + pleater hooks + clip rings = custom-looking dreamy drapes without the price tag. They framed the windows beautifully and made the whole room feel more luxurious than it had any right to for under $100.
Budget Breakdown:
Total: $1,550
- Feature Wall Materials + Paint: $150
- Closet Doors: $400
- Furniture: $600
- Decor & Bedding: $450
Real Talk: It's a Family Bedroom Now
We built this room as our peaceful grown-up space… but the truth? Most nights it turns into a 6-person/cat & dog sleepover. And honestly? We wouldn’t have it any other way. There's something about dog piling in together at the end of the day—that makes this room feel like more than just a bedroom.
Beautiful &crazy- that's us.
